CHAPTER SEVEN

Chloe

“Is there anything else I don’t know about you?” I ask Ben as we lie in bed after the second session of mind-blowing sex.

“What do you mean by else?”

Propping myself up on my elbow, I graze my fingers down his chest.

“You’ve always been so sweet to me. I never pictured you as being this … carnal. I guess that’s an accurate word to describe how you’ve seemed since you showed up at my door the other night.”

One corner of his mouth lifts into a boyish grin that adolescent girls’ dreams are made of.

“I told you … it’s years’ worth of pent-up, sexual tension, and you were the only woman I wanted to unleash it on.” He skims a finger up my arm, and I have a feeling we’ll be at it again shortly.

“I’m a dude, so I did cave on occasion, but those times were merely a release. I held back because I knew with you it would be meaningful, and I was not mistaken. We need to tell our parents tomorrow.”

“I don’t think our folks need to hear about the life-altering sex we’ve had tonight.”

Rolling me over, Ben covers me with his superb body.

“Life-altering, huh?” Seeing his charming grin again, I roll my eyes and feel my cheeks burn. “Nope. You can’t take it back now,” he adds, “but what I meant was that we need to tell our parents we’re together.”

“Don’t get mad, but I think we should wait. I’m not really up for hearing my mother go on and on about it. She’d be planning our wedding by midweek.”

“Speaking of which, I need to ask you something.”

I widen my eyes. “I hope you’re not about to ask me to marry you.”

“No, but this does have to do with that. My dad was prying about what happened between us after this month’s dinner. I told him how you’ve been fighting being with me for years, and he said he wondered if it was because of what our parents said when we were sixteen.”

“Which thing? They used to have a lot to say about us.”

“How if we weren’t in relationships with other people by our college graduation, we should get married.”

I clear my throat and glance away. That’s not what’s been holding me back, but it stirs the memories of what has been.

“No, I barely recall that.”

“OK. I told Dad I didn’t think that was the reason, but he wondered if you were resisting to spite your mom since you’re pretty stubborn where she’s concerned.”

Braving a look back at him, I mumble, “That I am.”

“I’ll never forget the night you told me you didn’t like me. I was crushed.”

“I know.” I touch his cheek, but I’d rather be anywhere than where I am at this moment because eventually, I’m going to have to hurt him again, and the reality of that punches me in the chest. My heart pounds, and I feel a lump forming in my throat.

“Hey, it’s OK. Waiting for you was worth it, and we don’t have to tell our families yet.
